ONS retail data released for November 2021 has highlighted consumers’ shopping habits in the lead-up to Christmas.
Most notably, retail sales have increased, with instore retail accounting for a larger proportion of total sales.

Key findings
- Retail sales volumes increased by 1.4% in November 2021 and were 7.2% higher than their pre-COVID levels in February 2020
- Non-food store sales volumes increased by 2% in November 2021, including a growth of 2.9% for clothing stores and 2.8% for other non-food stores such as computer stores, toy stores and jewellery stores
- The proportion of retail sales online fell to 26.9% in November 2021, it’s lowest proportion since March 2020 (22.6%)
- Clothing store sales volumes have risen above pre-COVID levels for the first time
